this poses an interesting question, and not one that is separate from the idea of whether "special ed" classrooms should actually have disappeared. Political correctness, and this newer, touchy-feelie notion that "we are all equally good" is fine, but not practical. There are so many different degrees of "Autism", and my son may academically have little problem, but what about the child with the diagnosis of "Autism" who will never read past a grade 1 level unless they have a great deal more help than can be offered in the "mainstream."
