Pa. artists train educators to teach arts to students with autism

Some educators in Perry County, Pa., recently learned in a summer workshop how to teach visual and performing arts to students on the autism spectrum by incorporating more concrete, step-by-step instructions for class assignments and, sometimes, offering alternative methods for expression. "When you are teaching kids on the spectrum, never forget that they're fully present inside themselves but they present it differently on the outside," art teacher Shari Donath said. Kennedy Center accommodates sensory issues at special performances

The Kennedy Center is following a national trend among theaters by offering special musical performances for children with autism and sensory processing issues. Among the accommodations the Kennedy Center is making: selling only half of the seats to allow children the space to move, having music selections vetted by experts and keeping the house lights low. The center also publishes a digital storybook to prepare children for the routines of going to the theater. Art is Focus of Dance Program for Children w/ Disabilities

A Los Angeles-area dance studio has created a program for children who have various physical and developmental disabilities. Teachers in the Infinite Dreams program all are professional dancers and, despite its therapeutic benefits, the program's focus is on the art of dance. "We want these kids to have the opportunity that every child can have, which is to dance, to fly, to feel the sense of accomplishment and to share that with others," the program's creator said. From June 6-12, 2010, VSA will bring together artists, educators, researchers and policymakers with and without disabilities from around the world for a multicultural celebration of the arts and arts education. Kennedy Center to Showcase Artists w/ Disabilities

The Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts has announced it will host artists with disabilities from around the world for the largest ever festival showcasing their work. Next June’s festival is timed to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Americans With Disabilities Act.
Organizers said they hope the International VSA arts Festival in June 2010 can change perceptions of disabilities by highlighting what people can accomplish, despite their challenges. See http://www.vsarts.org/
