Students who were the youngest in their grade level had 36%, 31%
and 30% increased odds of being diagnosed with attention-deficit/hyperactivity
disorder, depression and intellectual disability, respectively, compared with
those who were among the oldest in their grade level, according to a UK study
in JAMA Pediatrics. The findings suggest a need for more studies on
interventions aimed at lessening the association between age in the school year
and mental health diagnoses, said researcher Jeremy Brown.
