Studies consider identification of students who are twice exceptional

An earlier, more "holistic" approach to evaluating and teaching students with disabilities is needed to identify more students who may be twice exceptional -- exhibiting both learning disabilities and giftedness -- according to emerging research. In addition, some experts say the use of response-to-intervention techniques to identify students for special education may lead to a misdiagnosis of students who are twice exceptional, in some cases causing students' gifted abilities to be missed.
