Bristish Teacher suggests ways to include all students in learning
It can be easy for some well-behaved primary-school students, who cause no issues, to go unseen, notes Danielle Egonu-Obanye, an assistant headteacher and inclusion manager at a primary school in east London. In this blog post, she writes about the need to address the problem of the "invisible child" by working to bolster inclusion and get to know all students. Some suggestions, she writes, are to have shared learning experiences that include all students and make small gestures to interact with students, such as recommending a book. Report explores global state of children with disabilities
-
The
United Nations Children's Fund -- UNICEF -- released its annual assessment of
the issues facing children around the world. This year, the report focused on
children with disabilities. In general, the report showed children with
disabilities are often neglected and abused, making them some of the most
marginalized individuals in the world. Advocates say attitudes need to shift
away from seeing children's deficits and toward appreciating what they can offer
to society. Disability Scoop (6/3) http://www.disabilityscoop.com/2013/06/03/globally-struggling-unicef/18081/

Strategies for screening, teaching students with dyslexia
Strategies such as creating multisensory lessons and using text-to-speech technology can make literacy lessons more accessible for students with dyslexia, Sally Bouwman writes in this blog post. Bouwman, a U.K. lead teacher for dyslexia who teaches at ARK Schools in London, notes that her schools screen all 6- and 7-year-olds for dyslexia, and staff are trained to recognize signs of the disorder. "We encourage all our schools to build dyslexia expertise among their staff," she writes. Administrators in Ireland Strive to Curb Cyberbullying
Schools in
Ireland are being urged to take a stronger stance against cyberbullying, in
part, by educating students about its dangers. Educators also are seeking a
social media liaison, dedicated to taking requests from schools. "Principals
tell me that the social networks either do not respond or are slow to react to
their requests to take down abusive posts about a student in their care," said
Clive Byrne, director of the National Association of Principals and Deputy
Principals. Silicon Republic (Ireland)

World's Largest Autism Project
Posted by Robert Ring, PhD, Autism Speaks vice president of translational research.
I want to point out a recent review article published in the journal Nature Reviews: Drug Discovery. This article provides an excellent introduction to EU-AIMS, a massive five-year research program focused solely on autism. EU-AIMS, short for European Autism Interventions – A Multicentre Study for Developing New Medications, was launched earlier this year in Europe. The collaboration brings together in a non-competitive way 24 academic research center across Europe, global pharmaceutical companies and patient advocacy organizations in Europe. The collaboration will focus on accelerating the translation of basic science discoveries into medicines for autism. http://www.autismspeaks.org/blog/2012/12/18/world%E2%80%99s-largest-autism-project-gets-good-press?utm_source=social-media&utm_medium=text-link&utm_campaign=espeaks
