Marijuana Extract Tames Debilitating Seizures
In individuals with the most intractable forms of epilepsy, there's new evidence that a liquid form of marijuana can reduce seizures by over half without causing the drug's usual "high." http://www.disabilityscoop.com/2015/04/24/marijuana-tames-seizures/20240/

Epilepsy - Underfunded & Overlooked too Long
A Call To Action -- Newsweek cover story at: http://www.newsweek.com/id/193586
Epilepsy in America is as common as breast cancer and kills as many people. Up to 50,000 Americans die each year from seizures & related causes. More than 3 million Americans are affected by epilepsy. Their mortality is two to three times higher — & the risk of sudden death is 24 times greater — than that of the general population. Yet funding for epilepsy research lags far behind other neurological conditions, at $35 per patient annually (compared with $129 for Alzheimer’s & $280 for multiple sclerosis.)
A related first-person essay by Susan Axelrod, wife of senior presidential adviser David Axelrod is at http://www.newsweek.com/id/193587?tid=relatedcl. Their 27-year-old daughter Lauren was diagnosed with epilepsy at 7 months.

Epilepsy Genome Project
The Epilepsy Phenome Genome Project (EPGP) isa large study created to identify genes that influence epilepsy & genes that affect an individual's response to seizure medication. The National Institutes of Neurological Disorders & Stroke is partnering with major epilepsy centers around the country for this five-year study. Participation involves donating a blood sample & answering questionnaires. Numerous safeguards are in place to protect the privacy of participants, & participants are not required to travel to a study center. http://www.epgp.org/Pages/Default.aspx
