Recording for the Blind & Dyslexic (RFB&D)

This nonprofit organization provides an important resource that many people do not know about. RFB&D is the nation’s largest audio textbook library and provides materials to individuals of all ages with print disabilities (due to a visual impairment, learning disability or other physical disability) throughout this country. Nearly every standard textbook for grades K-12th is available and many fiction, nonfiction and special interest books. All books are on easy-to-navigate, specialized CDs.

RFB&D records new books they become aware of or that members request. Members receive discounted pricing for the specially equipped players and software needed to listen to the CDs. An institutional membership is available to schools and agencies to help them in meeting the needs of the students that they work with. Institutions may also buy individual memberships for a student and a person may buy a personal membership. More specific information is available @ www.rfbd.org.

Many students’ learning is limited by disabilities that affect their ability to read, since there is such an emphasis on written materials. Technology now allows so many options for learners. Materials like those listed above, screen readers, etc. allow individuals to hear the written word. Unfortunately, many are not aware of these materials and many schools and institutions are unwilling to fully use them.
