The number of K-12 California students in special education who have autism has nearly tripled, rising to 59,700 in 2010 from 17,500 in 2002, an analysis of state data released Thursday showed. The incidence of medical conditions such as asthma, leukemia and epilepsy also has increased, while the number of students classified as having a learning disability has declined by 10 percentage points, the analysis showed.
