Audio-equipped GPS helps direct students w/ visual impairments

A group of Nebraska students with visual impairments recently tested a new assistive device that uses global positioning technology to help them navigate city streets on foot. The Trekker Breeze is a hand-held GPS device with an audio feature that announces the names of streets and intersections as the user moves toward his or her destination. Educator Mary Robinson stressed that such devices are best used as a compliment to adequate orientation and spatial-awareness skills. Fremont Tribune (Neb.)
