Raised in New Mexico in the 50's & 60's. Worked with public school programs for students with disabilities for 30+ years, mostly as a director of special education. Worked for 2 years at a small residential state school for individuals with mental retardation. Now working with a state project that provides training and information for parents of children with disabilities.
I was on the board of the state association for directors of special education. I also volunteered with ARC of Texas, the Special Olympics program at various levels.
There is lots I do not know, but I do have experience and contacts.
this poses an interesting question, and not one that is separate from the idea of whether "special ed" classrooms should actually have disappeared. Political correctness, and this newer, touchy-feelie notion that "we are all equally good" is fine, but not practical. There are so many different degrees of "Autism", and my son may academically have little problem, but what about the child with the diagnosis of "Autism" who will never read past a grade 1 level unless they have a great deal more help than can be offered in the "mainstream."
