Drums draw Wash. boy with autism into a more social world
Vancouver, Wash., parents credit a set of drums and music lessons for helping their son with autism learn to talk and interact socially. The drums, for which Ian Engelsman appears to have natural talent, also has brought him social recognition by winning a school talent show. "You have no idea how many times he's been rejected," his mother, Claudia Engelsman, said. "But now, the drums have opened, maybe not other doors, but doors that offer opportunities."
