Lazy -- or not?


Labeling never works for our students, so why do we still call a kid "lazy" when he consistently loses his assignments in an messy locker? A new Educational Leadership article provides a model for coaching kids in developing executive skills: the cognitive processes required to plan and organize activities. Students sometimes perceived as lazy or disorganized may struggle with initiating and following through on tasks, controlling their inhibition of impulses, or exhibiting goal-directed persistence. Successful interventions have not only helped students' academic achievement, but also their self-esteem.
