ADHD symptoms more likely to appear in children exposed to pollutants before birth

A small study in JAMA Psychiatry found an increased risk of symptoms of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder and other cognitive and behavioral problems in children exposed to air pollutants before birth and at an early age. Researchers found that exposure to pollutants called polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons during gestation reduced the brain's white matter surface in the left hemisphere, with additional white matter changes appearing if the child is exposed to pollutants after birth.
