Children with autism appear to relax around animals, study finds

Children with autism registered a significant drop in anxiety while playing with guinea pigs, according to a study published in the journal Developmental Psychobiology. The findings support earlier research showing these children have better social interactions in the presence of animals. Marguerite O'Haire, from the Center for the Human-Animal Bond in the College of Veterinary Medicine at Purdue University, says the study appears to underscore the sense of security and acceptance animals offer children with autism.
