Preschool teachers may help in early detection of autism
Child-care workers evaluated 90% of children in Head Start programs in low-income and high-minority cities in New Jersey, most of whom were black or Hispanic and ages 3 to 5, and found 3% of the children met diagnostic criteria for autism spectrum disorder. The findings on the website of the journal Autism showed the important role that child-care workers could play in detecting the disorder among children who might not get early intervention services, study co-author Jill Harris said.
