Children, teens often treated with off-label antipsychotics for ADHD
Antipsychotic use among children aged 13 and older increased from 1.1% in 2006 to about 1.2% in 2010, and from 0.69% to 0.84% among young adults in the same period, according to a study in the journal JAMA Psychiatry. More than 52% of those prescriptions in children ages 1 to 6, 60% for older children and 35% for teens involved a diagnosis of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, which is an off-label use.
