FEDERAL GOVERNMENT CLARIFIES RIGHTS OF PARENTS WITH DISABILITIES


Child welfare agencies and the courts have the responsibility to protect children from abuse and neglect, but these needs often infringe upon the rights of parents and prospective parents who have disabilities. The federal government recently issued guidance to assist state and local agencies so that parents with disabilities are not discriminated against due to stereotypes or unfounded assumptions about their parenting abilities. The document offers specifics on how agencies can better serve parents with disabilities while still protecting children from harm.
