Youths with autism spectrum disorder and those with developmental
delays had 1.57 times and 1.38 times increased odds of being overweight or
obese, respectively, compared with those in the general population, according
to a study in the Journal of Pediatrics. The findings, based on data involving
about 2,500 children ages 2 to 5, also showed a 1.7 times higher overweight or
obesity risk among those with severe ASD symptoms, compared with those with
mild ASD symptoms.
