Researchers found that the average annual economic cost per
patient reached nearly $23,000 for youths and $24,000 for adults with fetal
alcohol spectrum disorder, which is higher than the average yearly costs for
those with diabetes or autism spectrum disorder. The findings in the Journal of
Addiction Medicine, based on an analysis of 32 studies from four countries,
including the US, should prompt the development of effective measures to curb
