The number of US youths ages 6 to 24 who visited the emergency
department for mental health problems rose by 28% from 2011 to 2015, with the
biggest increases found among teens, Hispanics and blacks, while the number of
suicide-related ED visits also increased by more than twofold during the same
period, according to a study in Pediatrics. Researchers also found that only
about 16% of those in the ED for mental health issues and 36% of those in the
ED for suicide and self-harm were seen by mental health professionals. Reuters
