Psychiatric emergency visits increasing among US youths

The number of US youths ages 6 to 24 who visited the emergency department for mental health problems rose by 28% from 2011 to 2015, with the biggest increases found among teens, Hispanics and blacks, while the number of suicide-related ED visits also increased by more than twofold during the same period, according to a study in Pediatrics. Researchers also found that only about 16% of those in the ED for mental health issues and 36% of those in the ED for suicide and self-harm were seen by mental health professionals.   Reuters (3/18),  HealthDay News
