The nonprofit National Council on Severe Autism has formed to
address the needs of individuals with autism with more severe impairments.
Popular culture's focus on the needs of those on the higher-functioning end of
the spectrum often overlooks the needs of individuals with limited verbal
skills, co-occurring intellectual disabilities or behavioral challenges,
members of the council said.
